Reasons for Bad breath

BAD BREATH is characterized by an unpleasant odor of the mouth.

Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease.

Gum disease is caused by the build up of plaque on teeth.  If particles of food are left in the mouth, their breakdown by bacteria produces sulfur compounds which is responsible for bad breath.

    CAUSES :

  • Food like onions, garlic.
  • Tobacco products.
  •  Alcohol.
  •  Poor dental hygiene.
  •  Health problems like ENT problems, GIT problems.
  •  Dry mouth.
  • Oral infections.
  • Dental problems.
  • Medications.

    PRECAUTIONS:

  • Oral hygiene maintenance such as bruhing twice and gargling after every episode of eating.
  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol intake.
  • Periodic dental visit and cleaning.
  • Oral rehydration with water, oral rinse and sweeteners to combat dehydration.

Causes for decreased salivary secretion

Dry mouth or Xerostomia refers to a condition in which the salivary glands in your mouth don't make enough saliva to keep your mouth wet.

Saliva plays a major role in our Oral cavity.
Saliva prevents tooth decay by neutralizing acids produced by bacteria, limiting bacterial growth and washing away food particles.
Saliva also enhances your ability to taste and makes it easier to chew and swallow.
- Enzymes in saliva aid in digestion.

SYMPTOMS:

If you're not producing enough saliva, you may notice these signs and symptoms all or most of the time:
  • Dryness or a feeling of stickiness in your mouth
  • Saliva that seems thick and stringy
  • Bad breath
  • Difficulty chewing, speaking and swallowing
  • Dry or sore throat and hoarseness
  • Dry or grooved tongue
  • A changed sense of taste
  • Problems wearing dentures
If you've noticed persistent dry mouth signs and symptoms, make an appointment with   your doctor.

   CAUSES:
Dry mouth is caused when the salivary glands in the mouth don't make enough saliva to keep your mouth wet. These glands may not work properly as the result of:
  • Medications
  • Age factors
  • Cancer therapy
  • Nerve damage
  • Tobacco and alcohol use.
  • Other health conditions - such as diabetes, fungal infection (thrush) in your mouth, HIV/AIDS or due to autoimmune diseases, such as Sjogren's syndrome.
  • Snoring and breathing with your mouth open can also lead to dry mouth.
  COMPLICATIONS :

If you don't have enough saliva and develop dry mouth, this can lead to:

  • Increased plaque, tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Mouth sores.
  • Oral thrush
  • Sores or split skin at the corners of your mouth, or cracked lips.
  • Problems while chewing and swallowing the food.
  TREATMENT :

  • Change medications that cause dry mouth.
  • Recommend products to moisturize your mouth - Artificial saliva or moisturizers to lubricate your mouth.

Baby tooth care at medavakkam

INFANT  ORAL  CARE :

I am aware of the person who can make me laugh when no one else want to and even when i dont expect anyone to : My BABY .....

Taking care of the smile giver is my responsibility and i do it perfectly this way:

  • As Soon as the baby is born he / she is fed with mother milk. It is ideal to clean the infants gums with wet cloth after every food.  Mothers milk is one of the most essential for baby till 1year.

  •  As Mothers milk usually devindles after 6 months hence , it is no longer sufficient  for babies growth  & development.
  • As this stage semisolids are introduced into the diet. It is rather the time for chewing and for accumlation of food in the mouth.

To Take care of the childs Oral Hygiene :

It is Mandatory to clean the childs mouth once the baby starts eating food and when first tooth peeps out.

  • Hand brush can be introduces to the baby to gently clean the tooth from 8 months.

  • Slowly a rice  size tooth paste can be introduced after 1 1/2 years for brusing in the morning.
  • After 3 years a pae size flouride tooth paste can be used with a small brush with soft bristles.

  • Generally when semi solid foods are introduced it is mandatory to give some water after every meal.So thats our baby would not develop caries and maintain good health .

Proper Chewing of Food

  Proper Chewing of Food

Digestion is the process which starts in the mouth.when the food we take mixes with the saliva. There is release of enzymes which starts the primary process of digestion.

Physical process of chewing involves our

Jaw - Lower Jaw is used for movement.

Teeth - Acts like chisel and mallet to grind food.

Muscles - The Four Muscle involves in chewing food that is present on both the side of the jaw helping the lower jaw to move.

Tongue - Help food to move in the mouth and mix with saliva to make a bolus for swallowing .

Cheek & lips - Helps retain food in the mouth.

Salivary Glands - Produces saliva into the mouth.

Brain - Produces the signals for chewing and digestion to occur.

DIGESTION /  CHEW YOUR FOOD

Digestion starts from the mouth where we chew our food and grind it to make a paste (bolus)  to take it into the stomach for further digestion.

Why to chew food properly ?

Proper Chewing takes time and helps in crushing the food into minute particles from which the nutrients are absorbed efficiently & easily.

The More you chew your food the more absorption occurs and more energy is produced and released.

How should i chew food properly ?

 Taking Smaller bites of food.

  Slow and steady chewing.

  Chew on both the side.

Chew until the food becomes liquid.

  Chew with mouth closed.

  Complete swallowing.
